"this song is also sort of about good charlotte"
I wasn't really planning on doing anything last night, but at the last minute I felt like I needed to get out of the house after work, so I booked it down and met up with some friends at Casa del Artista. I made it in time to catch the second last band (whose name I can't remember - this is a sweet write-up, huh?) and also caught all of Winning's set. For whatever reason, it's the first time that I've been able to check them out, even though I was really into the Red Light Sting, and Andy Dixon's other musical ventures aren't anything to scoff at either.
Even though the band collects Andy, and former RLS-ers, Gregory Adams and Paul Patko, the sounds a far cry from the Sting. The songs are busted up and seemingly pasted back together, and my initial reaction was that the performance was like live action Secret Mommy with just guitars/vox/drums.
PFork points us to this video of Marnie Stern's show at Pat's from a few weeks ago:
Sound is a bit dodgy, but understandably so considering how loud it was in there. I think I was standing right by this guy, but didn't notice anyone filming.
Let your best bros know that you guys aren't going to troll the Roxy for "bitches" on October 3rd, because the National are back in town that night, so all the prime fake tanned meat will be at the Commodore. Don't forget to pop your collar before the gentle sway of "Daughters of the Soho Riots."
Fujiya & Miyagi are at Richard's on October 9th. Dirty on Purpose open. If you're amped on watching two dudes whisper the name of their band "seductively" over generic electro beats, this will be the show of the year.
No Age are at Pat's on September 22nd. I'm kinda bummed that this is the same day as Handsome Furs.
The Awkward Stage is at the Railway this Saturday with Abernethy and Cloudspitter.
The Blow's Canadian booking agent has them scheduled to play the Pit Pub on September 6th. This would put them on the same bill as Girl Talk for his closed campus show. Almost makes you want to re-enroll, doesn't it?
now playing: Cat Power - Colors and the Kids
Labels: show announcements, show recaps, winning
