avant sleepwalk

Casbah! is back on. Actually, the weekly live show/dance party was back last week (Hallmark played), but I completely forgot. If you come here thinking you're getting correct/timely/useful info, you're going to be sadly mistaken sometimes.

Anyhow, in the past Casbah! has had its name attached to events that range from performances by local faves like Ladyhawk and They Shoot Horses Don't They? (among many others) to one of my favourite shows ever, TV on the Radio at the Pic, and this Friday they're hosting my favourite new local act, Japandroids.

Casbah! happens every week at Library Square, which is a nice room, but the drinks are usually terribly overpriced (I hang out in dives, clearly). $4 pints on Fridays though!

Tough choice between this and the Clips @ 1/2 Alive... I think I might try to swing both.

The Doers are celebrating the vinyl release of their already-out-on-cd album, Gaiety on August 24th at the Ukrainian Hall. Special Noise and Cheerleader Camp open the all-ager.

They Might Be Giants are at the Commodore on September 25th.

Mute Math are at the Commodore on September 17th... that seems like a big room for them.

On August 19th, Vanity presents Gig-Poster-Palooza at Casa del Artista. Love and Mathematics, Vincat, Sean Wesley Wood, Hills Like White Elephants, and Portraits provide the music, while a slew of local artists show off their favourite show posters.

Hylozoists and Mohawk Lodge open for the Besnard Lakes. Young Galaxy no longer does.

The Bravery open for Smashing Pumpkins. Whoever thought up this bill should get an award or something... by "something" I mean a head examination. (thanks Kevin)

Thunderheist round out the bill of the Girl Talk/the Blow show out at UBC in September. If you're thinking that you don't like going out to UBC, you should probably take a step back and realize that they could throw this show in Hell and it's still guaranteed to be awesome. Start sucking up to the students you know so they'll take you as a guest now.

Watch out for a sweet CD giveaway tomorrow. I want the prize for myself, even.

prime time of your life

If you come here with any regularity, you may have noticed that I go to a lot of shows (somewhere between 40 and 50 this year so far). I say that for no other reason than to give you some perspective when I say that Daft Punk last night was one of the single best performances I've seen in my entire life. I had read about their now legendary set at Coachella a few years back, but even with pictures, audio, and video to go along with the stories, nothing could really prepare you for actually seeing the robot rockers live.

PFork has some photos if you want to get a feel for what the visuals were like. They're really great snaps, but they don't really capture just how mind-numbingly awesome everything looked. Rest assured that it wasn't all flash without any substance either - far from it. The duo dropped a set that was full of the "hits," but almost all of them were re-worked, re-built, or flipped in some way (even if it was subtle).

When they kicked off "Robot Rock" to start the set, you could feel the excitement starting to build, but when they dropped "Human After All" part way through and the entire wall behind them lit up spelling out "HUMAN" in multi-story high letters, it was pretty evident that we were going to be in for something special. There weren't any lowlights and it's even hard to pick a highlight. It really was amazing from start to finish. To top if off, the crowd (at least 99.9% of it) was wonderful. Everyone was dancing, there was hardly any pushing or shoving, there were elaborate Daft Punk inspired costumes, and two awesome people were so excited they were waving their crutches in the air.

Pity the Rapture for having to open this tour. They're one of my favourite live acts, and their set was great... but they didn't even compare to the headliners. Really, how could they? They're mere men. Daft Punk are robot superheroes.

On that note, pity SebastiAn and Kavinsky who were treated less like part of the draw and more like some sort of pair of faceless, between-set distraction. It wouldn't have killed the venue to turn the lights down when they were spinning. They made up for the lack of spotlight by absolutely killing it at the after-party though.

Speaking of the after-party, props to Vancouver for coming out in force and showing Seattle how to get down. I think I knew or recognized half the bar (which doesn't even happen here), and also met some people from here that I didn't know.

On a final, tangentally related note, the next time you find yourself drunk in an American bar, you should know that this crap will make you feel really funky (in a bad way) the next morning. This will cure that feeling, however. That's my public service for the day.

Rob was there too. He agrees that the show was nuts.

don't run our hearts around

Black Mountain is at Richard's on November 3rd, but their already recorded full-length won't be out until "early 2008." Boo-urns.

The August listings for the Lamp are out, and here are some shows that may interest you...

The Mark Birtles Project plays on August 5th with Hot Panda (who were, according to my friend Luke, one of the only tolerable parts of NMW), the National Shield (who also come recommended by Luke).

The Ludvico Treatment play with Sex Party (that was fun to google!) on August 12th.

Joel Tong's new band What's Wrong with Tohei? are there on August 15th with Ghost House and the Rain and the Sidewalk.

Thor and Darkest of the Hillside Thickets are having a dual CD release show on August 18th.

And the third installment of the Finally dance party is on August 28th.

Speaking of dance parties, my friend Neil is DJing at a brand new one on August 15th at the Biltmore. It's advertised as being Better than Lonliness and it's only $5. Apparently the Biltmore has been renovated, and hopefully also less sketchified.

Bishop Allen is opening the John Vanderslice show on October 15th.

Oh, and if you're heading down to Seattle this weekend for Daft Punk, you should know that SebastiAn and Kavinsky get things rolling at the ungodly (for French electro) hour of 7pm. The robot rockers wrap things up at 11:15pm - which is around the time you'd imagine this sort of thing would start. On the bright side, that gives almost three full hours of action at the after party.

oh my god, whatever, etc

An Open Letter to Ryan Adams:

Dear Ryan,

I know most people will say that there is no way that one can blame you for the civic strike that has moved your show from the Orpheum on the 28th to the Commodore on the 29th, but based on our past, I'm sure it's your fault somehow. Remember that time you canceled your show after I'd already started driving the 500km to get to it?... for an "ear infection" (code for: I'm on speed balls, heeeeeey). Well, at least I found out about the show moving this time in time to get rid of my tickets and go see Daft Punk instead.

Oh, but you know what was a totally good trick? Rigging that Straight contest so I won what would have been front row seats if the show had actually been at the Orpheum on Saturday, but are now a pair of GA seats for Sunday that I won't be here to use. Hopefully they can find that bitch who puked all over herself and everyone around her last time you were here and give them to her.

Love,
Quinn

PS: Easy Tiger sucks.

Arctic Monkeys are at the PNE Forum with the Coral on September 30th. The pre-sale password is "QUICK."

The legendary Nick Lowe is at Richard's on October 10th.

Tori Amos is at a venue TBA on December 3rd. One of her split personalities opens.

Pride Tiger is at the Plaza on September 9th.

The Raveonettes are at a venue TBA on October 29th.

Oh, and on Monday night I made it down to the Lamp to check out Azeda Booth. I was initially in shock that their singer wasn't a woman (which was based on hearing their recordings), but they were pretty great. Check them out when they're back in town.

escape songs

I completely forgot to mention this great show tonight, even though I'm probably going, and even though someone I know is throwing the thing. So, better late than never, I implore you to check out the lovely (and local) Veda Hille with Azeda Booth (who play this wonderfully fucked up electro-pop), No Gold (formerly Yukon), and i/i (for whom I have nothing to put in these parentheses) at the Lamplighter. $5 before 10pm, $7 after.

Also at the Lamp, this Thursday the Fall Collection headline a show with Adjective, Canaries, and Christmas. To be completely honest, I have little interest in the headliner, but I've been meaning to check out Adjective for awhile... you should go do it. Honestly, it's Thursday, what else are you going to do that early?

Those Chalked Up (aka Expendable Youth) dudes rocked a mix for Radio Zero that's now made it up on Mad Decent and Discobelle. VanCity, represent. They're at Century House ever Thursday (no cover before midnight).

Two Gallants are at the Media Club on September 18th with Blitzen Trapper and Songs for Mom.

Peter from Beyond Robson emailed with info on the Daft Punk After Party in Seattle this Sunday. So, if you're heading down and you need to keep dancing after the show ends, just click here to RSVP.

Speaking of Daft Punk, if you can't make it across the border on Sunday (or even if you can), you can get your robot disco fix on Wednesday when the Makeout hosts a DP party at the Royal Unicorn.

Finally, if you can help the Clips book a show in Calgary on September 25th (they're looking to open for a local headliner) please email them at: contact [AT] theclips.ca

Finally (for real), the Ryan Adams show may or may not happen this Saturday (and I guess that goes for anything else at the Orpheum too) because of the strike action by city workers... I know one generates way more money than the other, but it's sort of lame that they can keep the anarchic shit show that is the Celebration of Light going (with nobody to clean up the mess in the morning - genius!) while everything else shuts down. Plus, no one is going to get stabbed at a Ryan Adams show (probably). Although, I guess it'll be behind a picket, and I wouldn't cross one of those anyhow. (thanks to Craig and the anonymous commenter)

we used to always sleep at night

The guys from Japandroids weren't all that impressed with their own performance at Hoko's last night. On one hand I can see why. There were some flubbed notes and false starts, they were rushed for time, and the short set seemed to put a bit of a damper on their mood. On the other hand, if you want to listen to music without mistakes you can stay home and play records, the time constraints meant they just cranked out song after song for a half hour without letting up, and a little bit of attitude - especially if it's from guys who aren't actually assholes - can go a long way.

My first reaction was to compare them to Death from Above, but I think that's just me being lazy. They're both two piece bands that make more noise than a two piece should be able to, but the similarities start to end there. Japandroids are guitar/drums, not bass/drums. They have complimentary vocals going. And they swap out DFA1979's dance grooves for some shoe-gazey, wall of sound action.

I was pretty into the songs they were streaming on MySpace, but their live show - and by their own admission a crappy one at that - was one of the best things I've seen from a new band (at least new to me) in ages. Check them out at Casa del Artista on the 10th of next month and pick up their EP, All Lies, at a show or at Zulu.

fancy footwork

Granted, I've never seen Chromeo live before, but the make-up party last night at the Bourbon was awesome enough to make me forget any and all disappointed that the actual show was canceled. I'm sure the $4 doubles helped too.

Some quick things you may or may not want to note:

- Gogol Bordello got moved to the Commodore.

- That Spoon date on the 17th of September that was being broadcast via their myspace/website/booking agency that didn't seem to make sense based on their tour schedule has been removed from said places.

- Mohawk Lodge is having a CD release show at the ANZA on August 9th with the Cape May.

If you don't already have plans, I highly suggest checking out Japandroids tonight at Hoko's. In fact, I'm going to go there right now.

Great article in the Village Voice about Canadian touring bands and border woes. Thanks, Andrew.

Liars is canceled. On the bright side, at least there's no decision between this and Animal Collective now. (thanks Chris)

waiting 4 u

Chromeo is canceled, because Dave 1 has visa issues. Yeah, on the surface, it makes no sense that a Canadian would have border troubles when he's supposed to play in Canada, but these things generally have to do with re-entry into the US after he touches native soil... so blame Homeland Security. Thursday isn't a total bust though. Pee Thug (the other half of Chromeo), Flosstradamus, and Small Town DJs are doing a bit of a make up gig at the Bourbon.

Thunderheist is at the Royal Unicorn tomorrow night. Thanks to my friend Indy for asking me about this show, which reminded me that I should probably try to go.

Head over to the SLU Records website. They've got the mp3s from the 7" lathe cut of Channels 3x4 jams that they put out about a year ago up for free download.

Random quasi-music related thought of the day: Did anyone else see Rescue Dawn and think "(slightly) emaciated Devendra Banhart" when Jeremy Davies comes on screen the first time?

2nd hand deal

Yesterday, I'd half-assed planned to just chill out at Hoko's for a bit and take in Hefe and the Neins Circa. The "chilling out at Hoko's for a bit" part happened, but half way through Hefe it was decided that instead of trying to stick around at one show on such a busy night, we would hit up a bunch of them. I didn't catch any of the Neins Circa, and no offense to Hefe, but the undisputed highlight of Hoko's while I was there was the woman who did "Moondance" for the karaoke contest portion of the evening. It was pretty amazing.

Our next stop was Wintermitts CD release at Frank's on Franklin. The band describes themselves as "ADD" and "genre bending," and I wouldn't disagree. With that in mind, my fondness for them varied from song to song. The only other time I saw them, they were playing as a 3-piece, but last night they were a five strong version of the Wintermitts, and that was definitely a good thing.

After the Wintermitts finished, I made it to the Sweatshop in time to catch most of the Clips set. I'm way more into their upbeat material than the down tempo stuff, and luckily for me, that's mostly what they stuck to. If for nothing else, they get loads of admiration for being able to get most of the crowd to dance when it felt like it was too hot to move at all. Their last song, especially, was pretty intense.

Bend Sinister finished off the evening (well, my evening - the party kept going after they played). As I've said before, they're just stylistically not my thing, but if you're into prog (minus the pretension), there's nobody doing it better in this city. They also got a new drummer. No offense to the old guy, but this new dude is an upgrade, which makes them even tighter than they were before.

get ready to ignite

Justice is at the Commodore on October 13th. Shit is going to be crazy. Don't sleep.

Greg MacPherson is at the Railway with Leah Abramson on September 26th.

Wintermitts celebrate their CD release tomorrow with Kate Duffy and Greenbelt Collective at Frank's on Franklin (1622 Franklin). They promise "drinks and goodies."

Mutators have a couple shows lined up before they head out on tour. They're opening for Frosted Tipz along with Big Bad at Pub 340 on July 19th and they have a tour fundraiser set up at the Emergency Room on July 21st.

Oh, and I saw Pride Tiger last night. They were good, but it sort of seems like they don't have enough material to headline a big(ger) show. I wasn't drunk. Perhaps that was the problem. Sports was ok. Taxes were rad. Full review on Streethawk soon(ish).

dark skies above

Bison are at Pub 340 tomorrow night to celebrate the release of their new disc and to kick off their forthcoming tour. Grass City, Cobra, and Hagatha open.

The Neins Circa are at Hoko's on Saturday with Hefe. The evening will also host Hoko's first "Karaoke Battle Royale." Look for me. I'll be singing "Immigrant Song." That may or may not be a joke, I'm not sure yet.

Speaking of the Neins Circa, you can also catch them opening for Dyad at the Media Club on July 19th along with Portico and headlining a show with Roger Dean Young & the Tin Cup on August 22nd at the Railway.

While we're keeping it local, Fake Shark Real Zombie are at the Balmoral on July 27th with Ludvico Treatment, Denderah, and Adjective. They're also set to open for Mindless Self Indulgence at the CCC on July 23rd.

The Ludvico Treament are also doing an all-ager this Saturday at Jem Gallery with Dead Film Stars. The show starts at 5pm which is a little early in rock n roll time, but it's free, and you can't really argue with free.

Diplo is in town with Switch on September 23rd. The downside is that they'll be spinning at Plush.

Aesop Rock is at the Commodore on October 26th with Black Moth Super Rainbow.

Supersuckers are at the Red Room on September 25th.

Black Lips are at Richard's on October 11th.

k-os is playing Malkin Bowl with You Say Party! We Say Die! on September 1st.

Jason Isbell (formerly of the Drive by Truckers) is at the Media Club on August 2nd with Leeroy Stagger.

Matthew Dear is at the Media Club on October 21st, where he'll perform live with his new band, Big Hands.

soft revolution

from Arts & Crafts:
Friends, fans and supporters of Stars... 2007-07-10

On September 25th, Arts&Crafts will release Stars' fourth studio album, In Our Bedroom After War.

We love it and are excited and proud to be bringing it to the world.

We enlisted Joe Chiccarelli to mix the album. He finished in early June, passing the tapes along to Emily Lazar at the Lodge for mastering. Last Friday, July 6th, a final master was delivered to us.

Traditional music business practice says we are to begin sending out copies of this album now. We give advance copies to print publications in hopes of securing features that coincide with our September date. We meet with radio stations in hopes of securing airplay. etc, etc.

Inevitably someone will leak the album.

Throughout this process, the most important people in this value chain, the fans, are given only two options - wait until September 25th to legally purchase the new album or choose from a variety of sources and download the album for free, at any time.

We hope you'll choose to support the band, and choose to pay for their album. However we don't think it's fair you should have to wait until September 25th to do so.

We believe that the line between the media and the public is now completely grey.
What is the difference between a writer for a big glossy music magazine and a student writing about their favourite bands on their blog? What differentiates a commercial radio station from someone adding a song to their lastfm channel? or their myspace page?

As such, we are making the new Stars album available for legal download today, four days after it's completion. The CD and double vinyl versions of the album will still be released on our official release date, September 25th. We hope you will continue to support music retailers should a physical album in all it's packaged glory be your choice of format.

It's our hope that given a clear, legal alternative to downloading music for free, you will choose to support the creators.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Sincerely,

Stars and Arts&Crafts

"this song is also sort of about good charlotte"

I wasn't really planning on doing anything last night, but at the last minute I felt like I needed to get out of the house after work, so I booked it down and met up with some friends at Casa del Artista. I made it in time to catch the second last band (whose name I can't remember - this is a sweet write-up, huh?) and also caught all of Winning's set. For whatever reason, it's the first time that I've been able to check them out, even though I was really into the Red Light Sting, and Andy Dixon's other musical ventures aren't anything to scoff at either.

Even though the band collects Andy, and former RLS-ers, Gregory Adams and Paul Patko, the sounds a far cry from the Sting. The songs are busted up and seemingly pasted back together, and my initial reaction was that the performance was like live action Secret Mommy with just guitars/vox/drums.

PFork points us to this video of Marnie Stern's show at Pat's from a few weeks ago:

Sound is a bit dodgy, but understandably so considering how loud it was in there. I think I was standing right by this guy, but didn't notice anyone filming.

Let your best bros know that you guys aren't going to troll the Roxy for "bitches" on October 3rd, because the National are back in town that night, so all the prime fake tanned meat will be at the Commodore. Don't forget to pop your collar before the gentle sway of "Daughters of the Soho Riots."

Fujiya & Miyagi are at Richard's on October 9th. Dirty on Purpose open. If you're amped on watching two dudes whisper the name of their band "seductively" over generic electro beats, this will be the show of the year.

No Age are at Pat's on September 22nd. I'm kinda bummed that this is the same day as Handsome Furs.

The Awkward Stage is at the Railway this Saturday with Abernethy and Cloudspitter.

The Blow's Canadian booking agent has them scheduled to play the Pit Pub on September 6th. This would put them on the same bill as Girl Talk for his closed campus show. Almost makes you want to re-enroll, doesn't it?

The Barcelona Chair play with Aerosol Constellations and Japandroids on August 10th at Casa del Artista.

Metric side project, Bang Lime is at the Plaza on August 17th. Their debut is out on Last Gang on three days before.

Fake Shark Real Zombie are rounding out the bill at the Sweatshop next Saturday. They won't be playing their instruments, but they will be playing rekkids.

idealism

According to Pollstar, their booking agent, and their MySpace, Digitalism is at Richard's on October 20th. The astute amongst you would note that this is the same night as Final Fantasy. You might also note that this would make an incredibly strange bill. Odds are the dance party is a late show, so don't expect some Violin chamber pop/European electro super bill. While he's (probably) not playing with Digitalism, Owen did accidentally let out the fact that in addition to Basia Bulat, he's playing with Great Lake Swimmers here though (although that post has now been edited since the tour isn't official until the end of the month).

Akron/Family is at Richard's on October 18th.

The Flaming Lips show on September 18th is at the Orpheum.

Zwan Smashing Pumpkins are at the Forum on September 24th.

Things that make you go "hmmmm?" - Juan MacLean is at the Shark Club on August 18th.

Zulu has LPs on sale right now. Alternately, if you're really lazy, Insound also has vinyl on sale.

Gogol Bordello are at Richard's on September 2nd.
