it made me think maybe human's not such a bad thing to be

Last Monday, I was down at the Commodore to see my favourite show of the year so far: Joyce Manor and Militarie Gun.

There were actually two(!) bands before the Gun, but that also meant it started before 7pm, so the crew I was with didn't get there in time for Combat or Teen Mortgage. I loved last year's God Save the Gun, but not as much as I expected to. Live, was a whole other story though and there was a little extra pop on everything.

There's an 11pm live music curfew at the Commodore most nights, so normally a band coming on at 9:45pm would've rung some alarm bars for me, but when all of your albums clock in around 20-minutes, that's plenty of time and Joyce Manor ended early, but still felt like they filled their time slot to the brim.

They leaned on I Used to Go to This Bar the hardest, but the 24-song set pulled from across their catalogue, including a couple of audience requests ("Chumped" and "Derailed" in the encore).

This band is fun as fuck on record and they're even more fun live and I was shouting along from "I Know Where Mark Chen Lives" all the way til "Five Beer Plan" (my 6-7 beer plan probably helped).

Album of the week

Kevin Morby - Little Wide Open

I loved Babies, but I've always just liked Kevin Morby's solo stuff. I love Little Wide Open enough that I'm kinda kicking myself for not going to see him last night though.

Chris DeVille has an amazing interview piece where Morby breaks down Chris' "album of the year so far" up on Stereogum that says a lot more a lot better than I could.

Song of the week

Iceage - The Weak

This album is going to be very, very good.

More heat

Father of the Year - The Fixer

It was probably stupid of me to expect anything, since it's been so long since Cam's put out any music, but I definitely was not expecting this smooth little slice of white boy R&B.

Of Montreal - Already Dreaming

I have not thought about Of Montreal in a long time, but I've been thinking about this for a week straight now.

Cinder Well - While the Womb Screams Silently

One of those songs that's heavy without being loud.

now playing: Johanna Samuels - Two People. The Moon
