through smiling eyes and shining faces, we all sing along

Maybe you've already seen that. It's Chan Marshall's latest foray into the world of advertising. This time around she's lent her pipes to DeBeers (eww) and recorded a cover of Cat Stevens' "How Can I Tell You" (oooh).

As usual, I'm not so keen on watching the commercial over and over again, but I would like to listen to it over and over again. I bet some of you would to. According to this interview in Spin (thanks to Frank for the link) there's another covers record out next summer, but until then...

download: Cat Power - How Can I Tell You (Cat Stevens Cover) (snippet)

While were at it, why don't we take a trip down Cat Power commercial appearance memory lane?

This was from a Cingular Wireless Commercial... and before someone asks, the Nerves wrote it, Blondie covered it.

download: Cat Power and Sam Bisbee (he did the music) - Hanging on the Telephone (Nerves Cover) (snippet)

And finally, from a TIAA-CREF commercial (if you go here and click on "work" and then "TIAA-CREF," it's the piano player video in the second set of clips), Chan's very brief take on Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere."

download: Cat Power - Somewhere (Leonard Bernstein) (snippet)

If the links run out let me know in the comments and I'll re-up them a couple times. If, however, you get directed here from another site months later, e-mail me... if it's awhile back and you comment there's no way for me to know, unless I happen to read the post (which is unlikely).

If you happen to be at home on Friday night (which I plan to remedy soon), you've got 4 more hours to win yourself a Rapture CD.

now playing: Cat Power - Colors and the Kids

I'm with you on the De Beers (Eww). I wish people would do some research on the diamond industry and come to some realisation of the massive profits made by companies like De Beers off the backs of poorly paid workers. They are not a company to be admired (INMHO)

i think her voice works well in these ads - what surprised me was the use of the Fall in the new Mitsubishi commercials

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:43 p.m.

I just KNEW it was someone's voice I knew, I've seen the commercial at least a half dozen times and I still couldn't think of who it could be!!!

blessed be that it is the glorious chan marshall, how could I not know?!

=)

thank you so much!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:39 a.m.

dear quinn,
can't tell you how much i appreciate your post that ends my high-n-low searching for id the singer of the debeer commercial jingle.
i wonder if you could provide the workable link to me again regarding the song? i'd really appreciate it and apology for the trouble.
anyway, thanks a great deal!

By Blogger Interdit, at 2:19 p.m.

Hi everyone, here is a link for the snippet file I made, it's uncompressed .wav file (to reduce the quality loss)

http://rapidshare.com/files/6419987/How_Can_I_Tell_You.wav.html

by the way, I am the one who uploaded the video clip to youtube :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:40 p.m.

OMG finally i find the stupid snippit. i am dying for a full lenth track. damnit.

also, debeers makes their money off poorly paid workers just as a lot of the fruit and vegetable, clothing and manufacturing companies do. i mean except they don{t use africans, they use illegal mexicans, south americans, etc. so i mean yeah ewww, but are you gonna stop eating fruit, wearing clothes or wearing diamonds?

i had to rant for a second sorry. love me some cat power.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:49 a.m.

Links are expired, but I would love an email of the snippets to matchstikk@gmail.com

The politics of this are interesting. A while ago, during an interview, Chan was being difficult about answering the questions she was being asked. She kept asking the interviewer how he felt about the human rights violations in Africa as well as famine and such. Well Ms. Marshall I guess we know how you feel about it because you just profited from the same human rights violations you sulked about during that interview.
I hope you donated all of that money to a sevice focused on such issues.

That being said, it's a great cover.

Can you please please repost the link for Cat Power - How Can I Tell You. The link is dead.

Uhm, no one has the full song. Check out Matador records site. It's not out, it's nowhere. It's probably a smart move to wait until the hype is at it's peak.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:11 p.m.

So the song is not available at all even to purchase? I too want to play it at my wedding... please help if you know where I can find it. Email me at rtomsovi@cc.edu

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:28 a.m.

Hi I was wondering if you could send the link to my email. mrsmilez3@aol.com Um, so there isn't a full version of the redone song by Cat Powers? Thank you so very much.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:20 a.m.

Did Cat Power ever end up releasing a full version of the "How Can I Tell You" song? I've been looking all over and, not surprisingly, haven't come up with more than the 30 sec snippet.

I figured I'd follow up since it's been a couple of years.

Thanks.
