sleep on your back and kick off the attack of carnivorous things
The upside to the fact that I finally have a regular day job, instead of several jobs that took place at odd and sporadic hours, is that I'm no longer broke all the time. The downside is that sometimes when I'm leaning on the balcony of the Plaza at midnight on a Thursday, I can't keep my eyes open. And that is precisely what happened last night, so I left Sunset Rubdown a little early.
I caught the midset rendition of "Us Ones In Between," and frankly, I'm content with that.
Magic Weapon played right before the headliners. The two piece (keys and drums) actually sounds a bit like a stripped down version of Sunset Rubdown. Nothing to write home about, but they weren't bad.
For some reason, Johnny and the Moon were on first, so I actually missed everything but the tale end of their set. Unfortunate.
Only is showcasing all of it's covers from years past on November 9th at Gaff Gallery. Later on that night at the Astoria, Adelaide, Petroleum By-Products, and No Gold play the after party.
Steve Aoki is at Celebs on November 9th. Paul D supports.
Speaking of Devro, are you keeping tabs on the Mad Decent blog? You should.
JPNDRDS are at Pat's on November 10th with Petroleum By-Products, Cheerleader Camp, and the Last Slice of Butter.
Sex Attack is throwing a birthday party for their friend Shannen on November 3rd at Frank's. If you don't know Shannen, you're welcome to show up and dance anyhow.
If you're not into the live show options tonight, Fuse goes all night at the VAG and Plan B goes down at the Columbia.
Labels: johnny and the moon, lazy show recaps, magic weapon, show announcements, sunset rubdown

Tonight's FUSE only runs until midnight, folks.
There's also some sweet dubstep action going down at Open Studios until you're sick of drinking. This one should be the best yet!

, atThe art gallery really needs to rename itself something that would have a nicer acronym. Seriously, VAG? I love eating it, but it's an unpleasant word.

ya... on another less-awkward note...
Sunset Rubdown's rest of show was good, but felt really weird. Stadium's and Shrines made a very nice pre-encore closing, but before and after playing it, Spencer appologized for how bad everything went. Empty Threats of Little Lord was the encore - it too was good. I forget where Us Ones in Between fell in the set, but it was a definite standout... I can't tell you what else you missed. The show ended at 1:15.
Did anyone go to Kevin Drew?

Yup, here's my wee recap.
Kevin Drew and Co. played a long 2hr+ set of BSS classics (an epic Lover's Spit, Cause=Time, Superconnected, Stars&Sons, etc, etc) as well as most of the new album. Drew was sick as hell but managed to keep the energy levels up, consumed about 6 litres of water and the band was totally enjoying being back in Canada after an eventful European tour. For Almost Crimes they asked for a female vocalist from the crowd and ended up with a dozen half-soused ladies trying their best to be Feist for a night. It was a warm, inviting atmosphere and a pretty good party. The new tunes held up very well with the old nuggests.
Wish I'd have been able to see Sunset as well, but it has been ages since seeing BSS (Richard's in 200?) and I left impressed once again. Dat's my two cents.

, atMaybe I'm alone on this, but I thought Sunset's set last night was incredible. There definitely was some kind of vibe in the air, and I didn't really get why Krug kept apologizing. I've seen them 4 times now and it was easily the best show I've seen them put on.
