Thanks to Manta Ray-Gun for playing Damaged Goods on Friday. These two are becoming one of my favourite local bands (which is why we had them back, of course), so if you couldn't make it down this past weekend and haven't checked them out yet, do yourself a favour and go see them next time they play.
In the meantime, you can check out their set on Thunderbird Radio Hell here.
Thanks also go out to Horsefly, who Manta Ray-Gun brough along with them this time out (not only do they rock, but they consistently bring awesome opening bands with them when they play). It's fitting that Ian's rocking a Dinosaur Jr. tee in that photo, because that influence is easy to hear in the band's music, right down to being epically loud. Keep your eye out for them.

Bend Sinister, who in addition to being great guys, are a great band who penned one of my favourite local tunes ever (see above), and they're up for $150k in a contest put on by the Peak.
Why not help them out by voting here. It's really quick and there's no arduous form to fill out or personal information to give or any crap like that, so if you've got a second, help them get some money so they can afford to put out more records and concentrate even more time on putting out great music.

I usually just post shows chronologically, but the Mental Beast Christmas Party and Eggnog Experience Compilation Release deserves a special mention.
On December 18th (hey, that's my birthday--sweet timing!), Machu Picchu, Fine Mist, Makeout Videotape, World Club, Needles & Pins, Analog Bell Service, Rose Melberg & Nick Krgovich, Brasstronaut, Basketball, Tight Solid, Vancougar, Apollo Ghosts play the Biltmore along with some comedy from Bronx Cheer, Manhussy, Pony Hunters, the Sunday Service, and VTSL.
They're all getting together to celebrate the finale of Mental Beast, a comedy series about a radio station on the verge of collapse at Christmas and the release of the Eggnog Experience, a compilation of thirty of Vancouver's finest musicians getting together to cover holiday tunes.
The first episode of Mental Beast premiere's on MentalBeast.com on December 7th and the following bands are lending their talents to the compilation: Lightning Dust, B-Lines, Dylan Thomas, Adjective, Secret Mommy, Al Boyle of Hard Feelings, Collapsing Opposites, Kellarissa, Dandi Wind, Noobie Noobinson, Blue Violets, Machu Picchu, Fine Mist, Makeout Videotape, World Club, Needles & Pins, Analog Bell Service, Rose Melberg & Nick Krgovich (of No Kids), Basketball, Tight Solid, Vancougar, Apollo Ghosts, Lust, Jody Glenham, Brasstronaut, Fanshaw, Haunted Beard, No Gold, Paul Anthony, Yukon Blonde.
Plus, all the money raised from the compilation and the show goes to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank (cover is $10, but you can get in for $5 with a canned food donation).
I really can't tell you how psyched I am for this.
Kick Evrythng, and Eeek play Smiley's tonight (Thursday).
Haunted Beard, Telephone Girls, and MT-40 play the unveiling of a mural sized collaborative collage at 2026 Wall St. on Saturday.
On December 5th, Little Girls, Walter TV, and Cat Attack play the Balmoral re-opening party.
Greenbelt, Half Chinese, Bench/Dawn Optimist, Aunts & Uncles, and Ok Vancouver Ok play an all-ager La Casa del Artista on December 12th.
Beekeeper, Steven Nelson, Ben Gorodetsky, and Max Katchetsky play the Backstage Lounge on December 15th.

Contest: Japandroids Ticket and Album Giveaway
Everyone knows how much I love Japandroids, so I'm pretty psyched about this contest and you should be too, because the prize is awesome. Brian and Dave are back in town to play the Biltmore on December 2nd to close out the latest leg of their never ending tour in support of Post-Nothing, the always fabulous Basketball are opening, and their label, Polyvinyl has graciously offered up two prizes for two lucky winners.
One person gets a pair of tickets to the show and Post-Nothing on CD and vinyl. And one runner up gets the album on CD and vinyl. Sweet deal, right?
If you want to win, just send me an email with the subject line "Japandroids Contest" to quinn.omori [at] gmail.com before noon on Sunday, November 29th and I'll pick two winners at random.

Manta Ray-Gun were so great last time they played Damaged Goods that we decided it would be rad if they played again. Also, last time they brought one of the bands they're friends with (the wonderful Cat Attack) that I hadn't heard, and they've graciously offered to do that again. This time with their buddies in Horsefly.
Manta Ray-Gun's also playing Shindig tomorrow, so if you can get out to the Railway, go and cheer them on, then come down to the Astoria on Friday to help celebrate what's hopefully a trip to the Shindig finals in December.
There's always a ton of great stuff to talk about in the weekly listings, but I thought I'd also note the White Lung and Womankind show at Honey on Thursday, which should be all kinds of awesome.
Check back later tonight for a sweet contest and in a few days for a ton more show announcements... and maybe another contest too.

This Friday and Saturday at the Railway features music, visuals, and magic (yes, magic!) utilizing all three rooms. Peace, All Purpose Voltage Heroes, and Muscles play Heist Lounge on November 24th.
The XX play an in-store at Zulu on November 26th before they open for Friendly Fires at the Commodore. I probably should have mentioned that before it sold out. Sorry.
Bad Fate, Flash Palace, Mt. Royal, Half Chinese, and Nihilist Party play the Woods on November 27th. The all-ager is a fundraiser for the Safe Amplification Site Society.
Mint Records hosts its annual "Ridiculously Early Xmas Party" on December 4th at the Biltmore. Aunts and Uncles, Kathryn Calder, Fanshaw, Kellarissa, Vancougar, Hot Panda, Carolyn Mark, and the Pack AD all play.
The Intelligence, Twin Crystals, and White Lung play Fortune Sound Club on December 8th.

The same night, Shindig's Ben Lai celebrates his birthday in style at the Railway with "Ben's Trip" (members of Apollo Ghosts doing Eric's Trip covers), Safety Show, Fine Mist, and Chad Blue. Even though it's not a contest, I guarantee that the judging will be "really close."

SK Robot performs its annual GbV tribute show, Guided by Robots, at the ANZA on Saturday. As always, the band performs some covers and then audience members are invited on stage to do their best Robert Pollard impressions. And, all the proceeds once again go to the Vancouver Rape Relief & Women's Shelter, so you can feel good about trying to get to the bottom of that beer tub full of Bud Light's before stumbling up to the microphone for a drunken rendition of "Gold Star for Robot Boy."
Mike Plume, Jody Glenham, and Jana Keeley play the Biltmore on November 16th.
Billy Bragg plays the Commodore on November 21st. Ahead of that, he'll do a free in-store at Zulu.

Raghu Lokanathan, Jenny Ritter, and the Wild Turkeys play Our Town on November 14th.

The Evaporators also headline a show at WISE Hall on the 27th that celebrates the end of the CiTR fundrive. White Lung and Mt. Career also play.
On December 3rd at Honey, Modern Creatures, Twin Crystals, and Pompoir celebrate the release of the Modern Creatures/Twin Crystals split LP, the Pompoir LP, and the Reflektionss/n213 split LP. Tight Solid is on hand to help them celebrate.
Former Polaris Prize winner, Patrick Watson plays the Vogue on December 10th.
Speaking of Polaris Prize winners, how awesome is this?
Also on December 10th, J. Tillman (of Fleet Foxes), Pearly Gate Music, and Red Cedar play the Biltmore.
The Pointed Sticks play two shows at the Rio on December 19th. In the afternoon, the Evaporators and Pretty Vanilla open the all-ager and at night the TVees and the Strange Magic lend their support at the evening show.

you know i need pills when you say 'i love you'
With the Cobalt shutting its doors and Far Away ending things off one a super bad ass note with the Misfits Halloween Party last Friday, Vancouver's down a few regular nights that hosted live acts, so it's good when I can talk about a new one for a change.
First Friday goes down, fittingly, on the first Friday of every month at the Eldorado (Nanaimo & Kingsway) and it kicks off this week with Needles & Pins, Unfun, Detention, and Born to Run, three bands that I haven't heard and one that I haven't had a chance to catch live yet.
But, while I haven't caught Needles & Pins in the flesh, Tony was nice enough to send over some recordings. The whole set is pretty awesome, but this one definitely sticks out as the highlight...
