Contest: WeirdCanada.com presents... Wyrd Festival at the Waldorf
You may have read about Weird Canada's traveling caravan of awesomeness, Wyrd Festival, last year (it toured around Alberta and featured, amongst many other fine acts, a few Vancouver favourites). This year, they're extending the tour and touching down at the Waldorf on May 22nd. The full line-up features 19-bands in two rooms and it'll only run you $20 (so, like, a buck a band).
This is probably the thing I'm looking forward to most between now and Music Waste, so I'm psyched that Paul from Weird Canada offered up a pair of tickets to give away to someone out there.

At long last, No Gold's releasing something and they're doing it by way of 7" on the always wonderful Broadway to Boundary (who've also put out wax by Mutators, Shearing Pinx, Sex Negatives, and Hot Loins, with a Pink Noise 45 forthcoming).

Contest: Sled Island Pass Giveaway
This Friday marks the second edition of Damaged Goods where I got to pick the bands, and I'm psyched to announce that two of my local favourites, Fine Mist and Candles, are both going to perform.
To add to the excitement, the fine folks at Sled Island have offered up a pair of festival passes to give out. You'll have to find your own way to Calgary for June 24th-27th, but I assure you, it's well worth it (even if you don't win freebies, it's worth buying a couple of passes and taking a road trip to Cowtown). I had a blast last year and judging by the initial line-up,this year should be the same. Also, in all honesty, I went purely for the music last year, and wasn't expecting much out of the city itself, but Calgary was a blast. We met a bunch of rad locals and also hooked up with friends from Vancouver. Speaking of the latter, Fine Mist, along with a bunch of other bands, will lead a strong Vancouver presence again this year.
So, since it's a tie-in with a show (and also because the prize is so sweet), this contest's going to run a little differently. You have to be in attendance on Friday to win (we'll pick the winner between Candles' and Fine Mist's sets). But, you can potentially enter twice. Anyone who pays cover on Friday will get an entry into the contest, but you can also email me (at quinn.omori AT gmail.com with the subject line "Sled Island Contest") anytime between now and 4:00pm on Friday the 22nd, and you'll get an additional entry into the draw. Make sense? Good.

A lot of the time when I give something away I get to keep a copy for myself... sometimes not. Generally speaking, it doesn't really bother me either way, but every once in awhile there's a prize, there's only one of them, and it's a sad realization when I remember that I can't win my own contest. This is one of those times.
Hot Chip is promoting the fact that they struck up a deal to release "So Deep" as a Zune Marketplace exclusive for a month, starting on February 26th. I actually no zip about the Zune Marketplace, but it can't be any worse than the iTunes store.

For one reason or another, I've never listened to Josh Ritter, which is strange. Everything you read about the guy makes him out to be the type of intelligent songwriter that I tend to dig. His management company was kind enough to drop me a CD in the mail, so I guess I'll make up for missing out on him so far fairly soon. Here's one for fans of Daft Punk and/or completely absurd film. Vice is being nice enough to hook up two people with double passes to the upcoming screenings of Thomas and Guy-Manuel's cinematic exploration, Electroma (one double pass for each showing).
It's playing this Friday and Saturday at the VanCity Theatre at 9:30pm, and if you want to take a hot date to watch two french robots walk through the desert along to an Eraserhead-esque soundtrack, just shoot me an email at quinn.omori [at] gmail.com with your name, contact info that I can reach you at between noon and show time on Friday (ie. an email you'll actually check during that time), either Friday or Saturday or both if you can make either, and the subject line "give me Electroma tickets."
They're billing it as the Vancouver Premiere. And while it's certainly the big screen premiere, there was actually one previous local public screening. The fine people over at the Fader hooked me up with a copy of the latest record in their Southern Comfort 7" series to give to somebody. Past editions featured Ladyhawk and M Ward, Mavado and Busy Signals, and the Black Lips and YACHT, but this time around they're getting a little more electro. The 45 boasts Ed Rec boss Busy P, who offers up "Pedrophilia," while Blaqstarr rocks the flip side with "I Can Feel It in the Air." I was so psyched on this that I convinced them to send me a copy too.

You've probably heard of these guys, so I'll keep it brief. After giving away an EP last year, Black Kids are releasing a full-length, Partie Traumatic, on July 22nd. And predictably, "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You" is the lead-off single. They didn't have any records to sell when they came through town with Cut Copy last week, but you can just go ahead and win yourself a copy of the CD version of the single right now. In addition to the A-side, the disc features "You Turn Me On" and Sophie B. Hawkins cover.

I think I mentioned the show awhile back, but here's a reminder that Does it Offend You, Yeah? is hitting Richard's (with Yo Majesty) next Wednesday. I'm mentioning it again 1) because I'm pretty stoked for it and 2) because their lovely PR firm is going to hook two people with a pair of tickets for next week's show.

Gnarls Barkley doesn't really need an introduction, although I will note that they're label approved introduction speaks like Gnarls Barkley is actually a dude and not the team of Cee-lo and Danger Mouse. Suspend your disbelief, music fans.

Contest: Hot Chip 12" Giveaway
A lot of the time when I give something away I get to keep a copy for myself... sometimes not. Generally speaking, it doesn't really bother me either way, but every once in awhile there's a prize, there's only one of them, and it's a sad realization when I remember that I can't win my own contest. This is one of those times.
Hot Chip is promoting the fact that they struck up a deal to release "So Deep" as a Zune Marketplace exclusive for a month, starting on February 26th. I actually no zip about the Zune Marketplace, but it can't be any worse than the iTunes store.
Anyhow, apparently the best way to celebrate digital commerce is to go totally old school, so I've got a very sick looking, honest to goodness, vinyl single - that's actually pulled from Hot Chip's latest LP, Made in the Dark - to give out to some very lucky person out there. Check the tracklist:

Contest: Josh Ritter Ticket Giveaway
For one reason or another, I've never listened to Josh Ritter, which is strange. Everything you read about the guy makes him out to be the type of intelligent songwriter that I tend to dig. His management company was kind enough to drop me a CD in the mail, so I guess I'll make up for missing out on him so far fairly soon. For anyone else in my position (or for anyone who's already one of the faithful), they also hooked up a pair of tickets to Josh's upcoming headlining gig at the Commodore to giveaway.
Let's keep this one fairly simple, and even though Valentine's day is sort of lame, in the spirit of the season...

Contest: Electroma Pass Giveaway
Here's one for fans of Daft Punk and/or completely absurd film. Vice is being nice enough to hook up two people with double passes to the upcoming screenings of Thomas and Guy-Manuel's cinematic exploration, Electroma (one double pass for each showing).
It's playing this Friday and Saturday at the VanCity Theatre at 9:30pm, and if you want to take a hot date to watch two french robots walk through the desert along to an Eraserhead-esque soundtrack, just shoot me an email at quinn.omori [at] gmail.com with your name, contact info that I can reach you at between noon and show time on Friday (ie. an email you'll actually check during that time), either Friday or Saturday or both if you can make either, and the subject line "give me Electroma tickets."
They're billing it as the Vancouver Premiere. And while it's certainly the big screen premiere, there was actually one previous local public screening. To make things interesting, if you can tell me the venue where the film was shown back in July, you'll get priority when I draw a winner. Contest: The Fader's Busy P/Blaqstarr 7" Giveaway
The fine people over at the Fader hooked me up with a copy of the latest record in their Southern Comfort 7" series to give to somebody. Past editions featured Ladyhawk and M Ward, Mavado and Busy Signals, and the Black Lips and YACHT, but this time around they're getting a little more electro. The 45 boasts Ed Rec boss Busy P, who offers up "Pedrophilia," while Blaqstarr rocks the flip side with "I Can Feel It in the Air." I was so psyched on this that I convinced them to send me a copy too.
As a semi-related side note, I'm not entirely certain, but I think Southern Comfort was what I was sucking back the first time I threw up from drinking.

The Hylozoists, who released the rather wonderful La Fin Du Monde last year, are hitting Vancouver next Thursday, supporting the Besnard Lakes at Richard's, and the fine folks over at Boompa want to send you and a friend to the show. They also want to give you not one, but two Hylos discs. In addition to La Fin Du Monde, the winner of this contest also gets a copy of the recently re-released (and formerly out of print) La Nouvelle Gauche.
