if you strike me down in anger, here i stand
It seems like ages since I've posted about any shows I've seen. Well, it has been ages, actually.
Between then and now, I managed to catch Leonard Cohen (who was brilliant--check out Elaine Corden's review), Boogie Monster (whose wicked set included some noisily re-imagined covers of Kanye and Japandroids), and Piper Davis (who was in her usual fine form at Glory Days).
Between then and now, that thing up there also came out (although, they didn't have it at RedCat yet when I went the other day, so I don't have the real thing). Some people whose opinions hold a lot more weight than mine really like it.
The guys were out on tour when Brian had to be rushed to the hospital, which you may have read about. Hope you'll join me in wishing him a quick recovery.
Lions in the Street are at the Media Club on Friday with Chris Read & the Pool Hall Gospel.
Hermetic play Little Mountain on May 2nd with Collapsing Opposites, Search Parties, and the SSRIs.
The same night, Jaws and No Gold play the Astoria.
Bravo Juliet play the Railway on May 6th with the Blue Violets and the Good News.
Bend Sinister play the Biltmore on May 7th with Language Arts and We Are the City.
The same night, Man Your Horse, Aunts & Uncles, and the Armadilettantes are at the Backstage Lounge.
Julie Doiron is at the Biltmore on June 14th.
Slayer and Megadeth are at GM Place on June 24th. Epic.
Three Mile Pilot are reunited and at Richard's on July 21st.
Kings of Leon are at GM Place on August 15th.
And, it's out of town, but the Cap Hill Block Party features the Jesus Lizard and Sonic-fucking-Youth as headliners this year. Two days for $40 USD. See you there?
Oh, and go, Canucks, go!

get well bomb
I'm booking the band(s) once a month for Damaged Goods, which goes down every Friday at the Astoria, now. The first one of those nights is this Friday. And, as you can see from the above flyer, the lovely guys in Boogie Monster agreed to play. They don't really fit the flow of a dance night, but personally, I think a loud, noisy band with DJs on either side is the best of both worlds. Oh, and the Astoria is finally allowed to stay open until 2am again, so come early and stay late.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I had a bunch of other writing to do and got invited to help sort through the Music Waste submissions (it's going to be another great fest). Plus, the bulk of the rest of my free time this week has centered around hockey.
Fake Shark-Real Zombie plays an all-ager at the Rio Theatre on April 25th with the Good News and the Heard.
Jay Reatard is at the Biltmore on June 16th.
The next night, Au Revoir Simone are at Richard's.
No Age plays Glory Days at the Biltmore on June 20th with the Goat. There aren't any advance tickets, so it's $15 at the door, first come, first serve.
The Decemberists are doing a pair of all-agers at the Vogue on July 21st and 22nd.
Way in advance, Band of Horses is at the Commodore on September 4th.
And there's a bunch of stuff going on for Record Store Day tomorrow that I'm too lazy to detail... but that gives you an excuse to visit Scratch, Dandelion, Zulu, and Red Cat tomorrow to find out for yourself.
Go, Canucks, go!

never get old
I made it down to the Astoria late last night to catch most of Colourbook. It seemed like every time they made it over from the island for a show, I already had tickets to something else, so I was pretty psyched to finally check them out. They'd been recommended by multiple friends and last night explained that. The game's back on, so I'll leave it at that.
Tomorrow, Aunts and Uncles (featuring members of the SSRIs, Friends from School, the Rub, and the Barcelona Chair) play their debut show at the Media Club. They'll open for Koro Kidinga and Man Your Horse, with Ford Pier rounding out the bill.
The guys behind Ice Cream Social are throwing a party at the Rio on April 18th. They'll be spinning, of course, but there'll also be a screening of Hard Day's Night and "the Ice Cream Socialites" (Ice Cream Social DJs Trevor Risk and Justin Gradin along with Louise Burns) will play a set of cover tunes live.
And a reminder that April 15th is the deadline to submit to Music Waste: submissions@musicwaste.ca

the boys are leaving town
Here's a super fast recap of the last little while:
I made it out to the Media Club last night to catch White Denim. Their debut's a nice blend of soulful garage rock and parts of a bunch of other things, but it sounded a little flat, which is the exact opposite of what they sounded like live. Last night they were raw, energetic, and really loud.
]
Japandroids played their last show in Vancouver until near the end of May. They're on tour on and off for the foreseeable future, so tell your out of town friends.
On Saturday, I was at the Biltmore early for AIDS Wolf show. The show was rather sparsely attended, which was a bummer, since they were their usually great selves.
Because of the lack of an audience, all the bands got pushed back a bit, so Shearing Pinx played on the floor to let AIDS Wolf set up on the stage behind them at the same time. Having the amps out on the floor made them even louder than usual, which sounded great at times, but also got close to uncomfortable at certain points. Teaches me not to pack around my ear plugs.
Twin Crystals started off the evening. Because the start got pushed back, they had their set time shortened. It didn't hamper their performance though. The guys just ripped through 20-minutes without letting up. Great stuff as usual.
I stuck around after to check out Modern Creatures at Glory Days, which turned out to be a great move. I was pretty fond of the band to begin with, but they really killed it on Saturday with a set that might have been the highlight of a pretty great evening of music.
Discorder's throwing a show at the Astoria on May 6th with Nu Sensae, Petroleum By-Products, and gr8-2000.
Clues return to Vancouver on May 30th. They'll play the Biltmore.
Crystal Castles are at the Commodore on June 4th.
Jens Lekman is at Richard's on June 7th.
The Von Bondies are at Richard's the next night. The Racoons open.
Telepathe is at the Biltmore on June 9th.

Notes:
- Far Away's been on for awhile (old news to some), but this is the first week they've had a live act as the guest. Tyler Fedchuk, Cam Dales, and Mike Barrow of Radio Zero (among other things) DJ regularly.
- Damaged Goods is now every Friday at the Astoria. Sex Attack DJs regularly.
- Nighshift is now every Saturday at the Astoria. Tyler Fedchuk and Justin Gradin DJ regularly.
And it doesn't really fit with the live music night theme, but after a week off, Ice Cream Social is back on at Shine tonight.

in the house
Re-Up sounds like a pretty cool concept: Rico Uno and My!Gay!Husband! playing rap songs all night with some pretty decent drink specials. I just don't get why all the advertising says "Granville & Hastings, alley entrance," instead of "Pop Opera back room, alley entrance." It is where it is, you know?
The Fine Mist, gr8-2000, Nihilist Party, London Drugs show that originally featured Chris-a-riffic and was originally scheduled for last weekend, goes down tomorrow at Little Mountain.
Speaking of Fine Mist, have I mentioned how great their new tune is? I have now. They'll also be opening the Brasstronaut homecoming/CD release show at the Biltmore on the 30th.
The Barcelona Chair, Owl Drugs, and Woolworm are at Little Mountain on April 9th.
Nightshift--that I thought was going to be a monthly at the Biltmore, but is apparently whenever and wherever Justin and Tyler decide, which is cool--presents Modern Creatures and Nu Sensae at the Astoria on April 11th.
On April 15th, Payday Millionaire plays the Railway with Trembling and Bright Light Fades.
Antler plays Little Mountain on April 28th with the Abramson Singers.
The Abramson Singers celebrate the release of their forthcoming album on June 12th at St. James Hall.
Lady Sovereign is at Richard's on May 22nd.
And the Pains of Being Pure at Heart are at the Biltmore on July 24th.

Contest: CJSF Birthday Party Ticket Giveaway
CJSF is celebrating six years on the FM dial on April 16th at the Biltmore with Wintermitts, Blackberry Wood, and the Trap Doors and they gave me a pair of tickets to give away.
We'll keep this one simple. If you want a pair of tix to the show, just email me at quinn.omori AT gmail.com with your full name and the subject line "CJSF Ticket Giveaway" before noon on April 14th, and I'll pick a winner at random. Easy, huh?
Oh, and the show's 19+. Sorry, kids.
