slow hand of death

Thanks to everyone who came down to the Biltmore on Sunday. The band situation got a bit mixed up at the last minute, so apologies if you came down to see Edo play (his keyboard was stuck in Little Mountain Studios) or read the posters that said Gang Violence would be on the bill (posters went up and something came up for them). Thanks to the bands who played and everyone who brought stuff down to sell. And a big thanks to the Kitchen Coup for cooking up some amazing snacks. Also, a special thank you to Jody Glenham, who filled in for Edo and his MIA equipment at the last minute... and also Edo, who let me help out and did most of the real work.
And now for some catching up...
If you missed night one of the Mint Records Christmas party a few weeks ago, you can still catch Andrew WK's surprise performance here, here, and here.
My friend Gord did a great interview with Women for Narwhal Magazine. You can check that out here.

I wrote about Transmission over at Chart. Though if you want the short version, the locals really stole the show. Bison, Ladyhawk, and Twin Crystals were all amongst the best performances over three days. Woodhands were great as well.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Wildbirds & Peacedrums. Pfork already gushed about them earlier this year. But if you didn't take their recommendation, you should really check them out (though the records don't do their live show justice).
Love & Mathematics is at the Biltmore on December 17th.
Collapsing Opposites, Aaron Read, Stefana Fratila, Ben & Gorodetsky, and the brilliantly named Ghost Face Killers are at Hoko's on the 18th.
Snailhouse are at the Peanut Gallery on December 20th with the Old Familiar and Brasstronaut.
Terrorbird plays Glory Days at the Biltmore on the 27th, replacing the Clips (who were originally announced on that date).
Speaking of Glory Days, despite the snow, it was pretty good on Saturday. Gang Violence were in their usual fine form.
Speaking of the Biltmore, they're hosting "Ice Cream Social vs. the ER" on NYE. Defektors, Gang Violence, and Juvie all perform and the Ice Cream Social DJs share the turntables with Justin (ex-Mutators, Sex Negatives, the closest thing the ER has to management). Tix are $15 in advance at Zulu, Scratch, Red Cat, and Beatstreet.
The Supersuckers are at the Biltmore on January 2nd with Carpenter.
Wovenhandis at the Biltmore on January 17th with Silver Summit and Sinoia Caves.
The Clipse are at Richard's on January 21st.
Beach House is at Richard's on January 25th.
The Murder City Devils have their original line-up back together and they're at the Commodore on February 13th with Past Lives.
Kool Keith is at Richard's on February 17th.
AC Newman is at the Biltmore on February 20th with Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele.
Antony & the Johnsons do an all-ager at the Vogue on February 27th.
Hawksley Workman is at the Commodore the same night with Chad VanGaalen.
Turbonegro is at the Commodore on April 14th.
Cold War Kids are at the Commodore on April 21st.
And the Weakerthans are at the Ballroom with the Cons on May 1st and 2nd.

til i felt the floor
By "real post later," I meant way later, obviously.
Here is a quick and dirty weekend update in two parts:
1) You know how you can get Unibroue products in six packs at private liquor stores now? Well, you can. You know how they're all at least 8% (except for Ephemere, which is sort of gross anyhow)? Well, they are.
Well don't drink most of one of those and then a bunch of other beer when you get to the Cobalt, or you will find yourself leaving before Taxes plays. Japandroids, Basketball, and Baby Control were all pretty awesome though. It was my first time seeing the latter, despite many half-hearted attempts. Worth the wait.
2) On Saturday, I missed Edgefest at Hoko's, the Vancouver Festival of Noise at Video In... I mean "VIVO"... and Modern Creatures w/Culte du Cargo because I had Black Mountain tickets.
It was my grandmother's birthday, so I didn't make it into the Commodore until Ladyhawk had already started. I want to say it's the first time that I've seen them since I got my hands on Shots, but that might be a lie. Regardless, while I'll take Ladyhawk on a bad day over most anybody, they really were something else on the big stage in the Ballroom.
The headliners weren't to be outdone though. Last time I saw Black Mountain, it got a little too drawn out at times for my taste. And while the band stretched things out here and there, the jammy bits were mostly a chance for McBean to demonstrate some killer riffage. Plus, the one time that the proceedings started to border on meandering (a organ playing chords while Amber sort of wailed over top for about 15 minutes), it was a good chance to head to the washroom (they don't fuck around with lengthy encore breaks, that's for sure). Oh, and "Don't Run Our Hearts Around" cemented itself as one of my favourite live songs ever.
The Cons are at Richard's on June 26th. Their newie hits stores next week, and while my jury is still deliberating their final verdict, stylistically it's a pretty good mix of all three of their previous albums and that ain't bad at all. I'd be bummed that I'll in Calgary when they're here... except I'll be in Calgary to see Wire.
And you can break the bank for Feist at Deer Lake on August 5th. You can buy an iPod (shuffle) for the price of a pair of tix... although the Shuffle will probably last the same length as the show. (thanks to Chris for the last two)
Dead Meadow are at Richard's on May 18th.
Oasis and Ryan Adams headline the "50% Chance of Unexplained Cancellation Tour 2008" at the Garage on August 27th. (thanks Matt)
Oh, and I'll do hyperlinks when I'm not in a rush and/or procrastinating from writing other stuff, like now.
Double-oh, if you're willing to stay up until obscenely late, apparently Radiohead tix for the entire second leg go on-sale via WASTE at sometime around 3am tonight. fun. If I stay up all night, they better be doing that "headzone" thing again.

stokasaurus
So now that it's four days after the fact, I will say that though I was a bit surprised that Ladyhawk didn't headline, and I'm still not into Jaws, the Saturday night soiree that Bison closed out was predictably awesome. The Astoria was packed with a line up outside at around 10pm. If you told any of those people that they'd be waiting in line to get into the Astoria on at Saturday night a year before, they would've laughed at you. Kudos to Erin and MJ for nurturing the old dive into a happening place to party.
The Fader has some new Ladyhawk for you to cop. Apparently so does the Soulseek, amongst other places.
I just want to point out that I called this one from a mile away.
Hey, there's some sweet shows coming...
Jason Collett is at the Plaza on March 22nd. (thanks MK)
Clinic are at Richard's on May 16th.
Christian from the Wintermitts is lending his talents to another band. They're called Sleep Holiday and they're playing with Young and Sexy and the Rub (who are presumably not the DJs from the Bronx) on February 1st at the Railway.
No matter what you think of the Black Keys, you should now check them out at the Commodore because Jay Reatard is opening.
Stephen Malkmus and his Jicks are at Richard's on May 3rd.
If you got shut out of Justice tickets, you can spend a quiet evening with Bon Iver at the Media Club instead for about 1/3rd the price. Phosphoresecent open.
Sex Attack! are celebrating a whole year of not playing records at No Tofu on February 8th. And their weekly at the Modern starts on January 31st, with the appropriate moniker, "OMG! WTF?" I voted for LOLLERCOPTER myself.
Thanks to the anonymous tipster who let us know that Matt Costa is at the Commodore on February 10th.
Collapsing Opposites, International Falls, Calvin, Don't Jump, and Lost Lovers Brigade are at Pat's on February 2nd.
If you're looking for the Makeout tonight, they're at the Lamplighter. They're playing a lot of the Clash. That's probably a good idea all the time for anybody.

the poor orphan child
A big thanks to Chad, who emailed me tonight to let me know that someone had posted Duffy from Ladyhawk's solo record on IndieTorrents. I knew that he did a record on Deer and Bird, but this one came as a complete surprise. The nine tracks include a cover of America's "Horse with No Name" and also three tracks that I've never heard before. But perhaps more interestingly, it captures stripped down versions of four tracks from Ladyhawk's self-titled debut, as well as live favourite, "Faces of Death."
There's a really nice solo take on "Sad Eyes/Blue Eyes," but my favourite (after one listen) is the version of "Long 'til the Morning." The druggy jam out clocks in at over 7 minutes on Ladyhawk's record, but here it's just over half the length and is decorated with some alt-countryish banjo leads.
It's a nice treat for any Ladyhawk fans out there, but also a pretty damn good little release in its own right.
Normally, I don't post full albums, but as far as I can tell this is long since deleted. If you're on #IT, please grab the torrent from there and show the uploader some love. Otherwise, enjoy.

Due to overwhelming demand, Music Waste - which runs June 7th to 10th this year, is opening up the fest with "Go Your Own Waste" in addition to the Only curated shows. The details from their Facebook group:
GYOW works like this:Chromeo is at the Red Room on July 19th with Flosstradamus. Break out your vintage Air Jordan's, skinny jeans, and ironic plastic sunglasses.
1. Set up a gig in Vancouver somewhere, on June 7, 8, or 9
2. The cover at the door can be no more than $5.
3. You have to accept the Music Waste pass.
4. Email us the details and your contact info to " goyourownwaste@musicwaste.ca" by Sunday, May 20th.
In return, you are in. Your show will appear in the Music Waste guide, the website, and in the listings in the papers.
And finally, while I don't usually talk about movies here, I have to mention something about Spiderman 3.

And that is, that it should have been a hint and a half to Sam Raimi that there was trouble when evil, symbiote infested Peter Parker ended up looking like Conor Oberst.
Approximately 35 hours left to snag Circlesquare tickets.
