Obviously, the appropriate first post in a month on your blog is about your own bands show.
This is tonight at the Biltmore. Check us out on Bandcamp and come down to the Biltmore.

been reaching for my baby
I made it down to the Media Club on Monday night to catch Tennis. I missed the harmonies that help make the record so great, but Alaina Moore's singing was so strong live, it almost made up for the absent extra vocal parts. They played (more or less) the whole record, a cover I didn't recognize, and a couple of new tunes for a set that was concise enough for a weekday (and for a new band), but long enough for a proper headlining set. The Media Club was packed out for
Unrelated to live music, because there's no band this month, but I'll be playing records (note: not "DJing," DJ's can competently match beats either... at least with the aid of a computer. I can just play records) at Damaged Goods at the Astoria tomorrow night. If you too think that it's appropriate to follow "Glad Girls" with Robyn and then with a Misfits record during a dance party, come down early. If not, come down anyways, because Dustin and Jake will be playing songs that normal people like to dance to.
Somehow, I got nominated in the CBC Radio 3 "Best Canadian Music Website" Poll. I'm flattered, mystery nominator, but let's keep it real here and all throw the local vote behind Winnie Cooper. Ok? Sweet.

in the moonlight, in the moonlight we can get it right
Two quick things:
1) A gentle reminder that Fine Mist plays the Agro Cafe on Granville Island (re-named the Fringe Bar for Fringe Fest) tonight! Show starts at 10:30pm.
2) My review of the Block Party is up on Exclaim.ca

glitter pills

Apparently 90% of the people who had planned to see the nearly sold out Crystal Castles/HEALTH show were going for the former, because after the duo was forced to drop off the bill, attendance was a bit sparse at Dick's last night, despite the newly discounted ticket price.

Basketball started off the evening. To be completely honest, the last two times I saw them, I was really drunk, though I remember them being pretty good. Last night, they were awesome. I didn't notice - or, at least, I didn't remember - all the sequenced drums and synth squeals that laid the backbone for most of their songs (although David assured me that they'd always been there). Some of the jammy outros were a bit too long for my tastes, but on the whole they were really good. See that kids? You don't need alcohol to have a good time. In fact, you might want to avoid it, if you plan on appreciating what you're seeing and hearing.

Mutators were vicious. I don't think there's band in the city that sounds more brutal and menacing. But if you've been here before, you know my feelings on them.

I was pretty enamored with HEALTH the the last time they came through Vancouver, but their set last night was amazing. One of the best things I've seen all year, and even more impressive because, due to the rather small crowd, the band didn't really have anything to feed off to bring such an energetic performance to the stage. Their album is one of my favourite records right now, but yesterday's live show brought things to the next level.
And because sometimes I like to throw to semi-related, shameless plugs, if you want to pick up the new copy of Color you'll find the article that I wrote on them..
Hey, let's give away a Hot Chip record. Congratulations go out to Gabriel, who takes home the ultra sick "Ready for the Floor" single that many of you (and me) wanted. Thanks to Will at Cornerstone Promotion for hooking up the much sought after prize.
This month's edition of Technotown Boogiedown is a doozy. Secret Mommy, Montag, Colby Sparks are the featured performers, while regulars (and part-organizer) the Swords of Righteousness Brigade holds it down as usual. DNGROUS ADDRESS provide some added visual flair and it all goes down on March 20th.
Terrorbird, White Owl, and the Boogie Monster are at the Astoria on March 29th.
The Blow does an all-ager at St. James Hall on April 17th.
Buck 65 is at the Commodore on May 7th. Cadence Weapon, whose fantastic new record came out on Tuesday, opens.
The Kooks are at the Commodore on May 24th.

i only did it 'cause i felt so lonely
Actually, I did it because it was free and also right by my new place.
On Monday, the Biltmore re-opened after renovations and under new management, celebrating with a free show with the Choir Practice and the Buttless Chaps. I snapped some pics, but they're still stuck on my camera, so you'll have to trust me when I say that I'd never though that I'd describe the Biltmore as looking "classy," but it does.
I'm interviewing Zak, who's handling all the booking for the venue, for Tooth and Dagger tomorrow night, but before speaking a word to him (at least in person), I can tell you that you should be excited about hearing that, because he also does the booking for Broken City in Calgary and he was one of the minds behind Sled Island (that featured the Boredoms last year).
SWAK finally announced some shows for the New Year...
Baby Dee is at the Media Club on February 10th.
Pinback is at Richard's on February 15th.
And they're bringing the Mountain Goats back to Richard's on February 22nd.
and Petroleum By-Products and Suspiria are at the Balmoral on December 22nd.
Wintersleep is at the Commodore on February 16th.
I wrote something on Gob for Chart that I thought they canned, since it was due months ago, but apparently it's in the new issue. No, seriously.
I wrote about AIDS Wolf for Chalked Up... check Gordon's sweet photos. If you have photos or video from their stop here (or anywhere else), the band wants 'em: aidswolf [AT] aidswolf.net. Don't forget to wish Chloe a speedy recovery from her broken foot while you're at it.
And last, but most certainly not least, it's my sister's birthday today. Happy birthday, kid... see you in a week.
download: Voxtrot - Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Wives
It's the only song with "sister" in the title that I could think of, save for an Air track from the Virgin Suicides soundtrack (too morbid) or "Oh, Sister" by Dylan (which is either about jesus, wanting to get with a lady and calling her "sister" in that hippy way, or both - regardless, also not good).

just a little bit more
I wrote a Chart story on Lions in the Street, where Chris gave me the lowdown about, among other things, how 604/Universal is finally releasing the album that the band recorded (mostly - they never finished it) when they were known as the Years. The thing is, they're going to put it out under the name "Lions in the Street," even though the guys haven't played those songs live since they regrouped, which was after they were forced into major label limbo.
The interesting and also somewhat appalling thing is that there's absolutely no logical reason to release this record now (especially under the band's new name). There will be no tour support. And while Chris said that they're still very proud of the record, the label certainly isn't going to get any cooperation from the band they dropped and are currently holding in a legal stalemate when it comes to promotion. It's also not as though Lions in the Street have somehow positioned themselves as the next Arctic Monkeys or anything either, so it's not as though the label is going to cash in on the endeavor. In fact, based on the circumstances, I fail to see how they'll make any money off of it at all.
It's easy to look at the music industry and blame everything on the quest for the almighty dollar, but it's things like this that make me think that it's more about ego than anything else... which goes a long way to explain why the industry is tanking.
Consequently, someone has posted the lost record on the Pirate Bay under "Lions in the Street - the Years." It's not incredibly far removed from what the guys are doing now, but the new stuff is certainly an improvement, if you ask me. If you want some actual new LitS material, they've got a demo and a cover of "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere" up on their official site.
Speaking of Pirate Bay, TMT reports that they're suing some (divisions of) major labels over leaked emails that suggest the labels in question are paying hackers to screw up their servers.
The Vancouver Sun asks, "can there be too many concerts?" and finds out that it all comes down to demand. More hard hitting investigative journalism from the folks at CanWest.
Meanwhile, Tooth and Dagger reports on some of the "less conventional" show venues that are popping up around the city and Streethawk has a more in-depth discussion with Hoko.
Speaking of Hoko's, Dustin from (Adjective and Sex Attack) is celebrating his birthday with a free dance party there this Saturday. His Sex Attack mates will provide the tunes.
Scratch announced their third (chronologically the second) 20th Anniversary Party. On November 9th at Pat's, the Tranzmitors, Thor, Vancougar, French Paddleboat, and Weathered Pines will help the store celebrate two decades in business.
Patrick Watson is at St. James Hall on December 7th with Plants and Animals. How's that for a timely announcement? (thanks Shea)
Jon Rae (and also the River?) are at Gaff Gallery on November 2nd with Adelaide and Chad from My Project Blue. It's an early show - doors at 8pm, over by 11pm - so you could hit this up and still go somewhere else afterward. (thanks Ben)
Someone died watching the Smashing Pumpkins last night.
Those guys from Bison were cordial enough to sit down with me for ChalkedUp. If you haven't picked up Earthbound yet, you should go do that now, while you can still find a copy.
And last, but not least, congrats go out to Jade, who wins the Hylozoists prize pack (two discs and two tickets to tomorrow night's show) and to Ryan, who wins the Klaxons tickets. You can still try to cop freebies for the latter over at ChalkedUp.
Jade and Ryan can both thank my friend Spencer, who was the key to their victory, due to my highly advanced drawing method of, "Spencer pick a number between 1 and _."

art crime
I guess if I lived in Edmonton, I'd be pretty psyched when I got to leave, so that's what I'm going to presumptuously chalk up the one-two punch of ridiculously high energy performances at the Lamp last night from a pair of bands that hailed from Champion City to (ps: time for a new nickname).
I went to the show on my friend Luke's recommendation that Hot Panda were a must see. Musically, they were pretty good (nice pop tunes; nothing mind blowing), but it was hard to deny that their live show was anything short of great. The Mark Birtles Project closed the show, and while they suffer from the terrible tragedy of naming their band after their singer, they were great live. A little heavy on the cliche rockstar poses, but they had a ton of energy, and sounded like a more garage-y version of Les Savy Fav.
The National Shield were the first act that I caught (Old Bridge opened the show), and while Chris and company were far less animated than the bands that followed, I don't find much to complain about when I can catch a set by them.
On Saturday night my friend Anne and I teamed up to compete in Salbourg's second iPod battle. We got bounced in the second round by (maybe) the team that won(?). Mad respect to ED who dropped some sick hardcore punk jam and to Warren and Kellen, who win the prize for least likely song choice for playing "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. I went to the after hours and am still being forced to remember that I don't typically stay out until 5am anymore, because it takes me about two days afterwards before I feel like doing anything other than Scrabble on Facebook.
Speaking of the worst (does that make it the best?) procrastination tool ever invented, since Frank started one today and Beyond Robson and the Commodified both have them, I started a Facebook Group. Evidently, a lot of you know who I am, so join up and I will (sort of) know who you are, and that will make me feel less awkward... or perhaps more awkward. I'm not sure.
Sea Wolf is at the Media Club on October 7th.
Bison, Taxes, and Cobra are at the Balmoral on September 15th. I have no idea who is headlining, but I'm going to make the baseless assumption that it's Bison.
Also on September 15th, Bend Sinister kick off their forthcoming CBC Radio 3 sponsored tour at Brad Gough Studios (on Cordova, just East of Hawks) with the Clips and No Gold (formerly Yukon and
Honestly, most of you are sleeping on this Fader Mixtape. A lot of lesser known acts are on the thing, but trust me, they're pretty much all great tracks. You could even enter so you can give me the copy. (only kidding... mostly)
Mike from the London Spy just emailed to say that they're on the bill with Aerosol Constellations, Japandroids, and the Barcelona Chair this Friday at Casa Del Artista. Even more bang for your buck. I might have the running order listed wrong, but you should show up early anyhow. There's a BBQ beforehand and if you get there for that you can catch all the bands and eat something tasty.
Tomorrow! One of your last chances to dance at the Lamplighter before it shuts down happens with TO's Woodhands. The Public or the Press, Brasstronaut (aka Edo from the Clips' other band), and Artemis Jackson open things up.

the flames rose to her roman nose and her walkman started to melt

I'm in this thing tonight. Come by the Unicorn and cheer me on... please.
Last night I made it down to Casbah! and caught Japandroids and Hepatidalwave. The latter featured one of the guys from the Doers being very un-Doer-like. They were ultra noisy. I was left a bit lukewarm on the performance as a whole, but there were definitely some moments. After last night I'm still of the opinion that Japandroids are amazing. You should check them out next Friday... and show up early. There's a BBQ beforehand.
Library Square was a bit empty (which is probably better than it being filled with it's regular clientele), so despite the fact that John Cougar was spinning some pretty good tunes, we bounced to 1/2 Alive. Sadly, I wasn't there in time to catch the Clips.
Blood Brothers is canceled. I am going to spend the money from the ticket on extra beers so I'm less shy in front of people tonight.
In happier news, the Vic Square Block Party line-up is out, and it's so good that I almost regret the fact that I'll be down at Bumbershoot watching Wu-Tang... almost. Frog Eyes headlines and the Choir Practice, Secret Mommy Quintet, Chet, No Gold, Modern Creatures, and White Lung round out the bill (so far). If you're feeling flush, you can help make sure the event actually happens with a donation: here.
