A lot of the time when I give something away I get to keep a copy for myself... sometimes not. Generally speaking, it doesn't really bother me either way, but every once in awhile there's a prize, there's only one of them, and it's a sad realization when I remember that I can't win my own contest. This is one of those times.
Hot Chip is promoting the fact that they struck up a deal to release "So Deep" as a Zune Marketplace exclusive for a month, starting on February 26th. I actually no zip about the Zune Marketplace, but it can't be any worse than the iTunes store.

damaged enough
I was going to take it sort of easy this weekend, but there was a ton of stuff going on, so that resolution became one those "who am I kidding?" statements.
On Friday, I headed down to the Astoria to catch Twin Crystals. They weren't as intense and loud as last time I've seen them, but that wasn't worse per se, just different. Jesse only rocked a guitar on the first song, with the rest of the set being characterized by he and Jeremiah's dueling synths. Oh, and just because it was less loud, doesn't mean it wasn't loud enough.
They've got a super-limited (50 copies) lathe cut 10" up for sale at Summer Lovers Unlimited that I should order soon.
I'm pretty into Taxes at the worst of times, but they were on fire on Friday. Best performance of their's that I've seen for sure. When Twin Crystals took the stage, Jesse quipped that he "(didn't) know how (they) could follow Taxes." Usually such statements - even when the opening band really delivers - are a polite way to give a nod to whomever went on before you, but as good as Twin Crystals consistently are, he may have had a legitimate point that night. That's not taking anything away from Twin Crystals, Taxes were just really on point.
I bailed during Owl Drugs first song. That's not a reflection on them, since I wasn't even there long enough to form a proper opinion, but I was still under the false impression that I was going to have a relaxed (and sleep filled) Friday/Saturday.
On Saturday, I started things off at Hoko's, getting there in time for Nihilist Party. I was down with the beats, but less down with the rhymes (well, vocals, not necessarily "rhymes"). But there are worse side dishes for your sushi, I suppose.
Terrorbird were up next, and were playing as a two-piece. Good stuff as usual, though when they had the extra keys, they definitely added something to the overall product.
Nu Sensae were their usual wonderful selves: loud and fast. So fast, in fact, that I stepped out for a moment and missed most of their set. My loss.
gr8-2000 finished things off with his frenetic brand of electro. Tom, as always, was full of boundless energy, and was also having fun throwing thinly veiled barbs at the people chatting in the back.
And also worth a mention (and some praise): Ben from Crystal Beard was there with the lovely ladies who do videos at BtL to provide some added visual flavour to the evening.
I was going to head to the Biltmore after that, but apparently they've been rezoned and can only stay open until 1am now, so it was off to the Emergency Room.
I got there in time for Mutators, whom I have nothing new to say about... favourite live act in Vancouver... slayed... etc. etc. etc.
Actually, on that note, Shearing Pinx were up next, and my sentiments are similar: quality as usual.
The main event of the evening was Monotonix, who were here all the way from Tel Aviv. To put it succinctly, they were mind blowing.
I was standing around wondering when they were going to start when my question was answered by a drum cymbal that was thrust in the air... on fire. From there it was about an hour of absolute madness. Throw their name into google, and you'll note that Vancouver isn't the only place that's been totally destroyed by these guys.
The recorded material just isn't the same, but if they ever come back, definitely go see them.
And if you were there, no, that wasn't Frank Zappa.
Speaking of Twin Crystals, they're kicking off their tour (which takes them down to SXSW and back) on Friday at the ER. Nu Sensae, Basketball, and Adjective are going to help give them a proper send off. Justin, Jesse, and Benjamin spin records after the bands.
Attack in Black and Smoosh open up the Tokyo Police Club show on May 16th at the Plaza.
Atmosphere is at the Commodore on May 14th with Abstract Rude
Mutators and Modern Creatures are having a fundraiser for the epic (seriously, check the dates) tour that they're set to embark on this Spring/Summer on April 26th at the ER.
The SSRIs are giving away their music. I haven't listened yet, but if you like it, make sure you toss them some money by paying to see them play... but that goes without saying.
Speaking of free music, if you haven't already checked out the latest Radio Zero podcast, you should get on that. All of them are quality, but #47 features one of my favourite tracks from the (sadly) now-defunct local unit, Fuck Me USA, "Infinite Slope."

Taxes - Crystal Gravy
There are only two problems with Taxes' self-released EP. One is that the rather lo-fi sounding recording betrays how much bang and clatter they produce live. And the second is that it's so short.
Crystal Gravy finds four familiar Vancouver faces combing their past and present affiliations (Go Go Stop, Ghosthouse, WPP, Plus Perfect, Safety Show, Weather Pines, and a million other projects), taking all the loudest bits, and throwing them together into a neat little package.
I'm going to leave it at that, because you know what is better than my crappy review? Checking them out for yourself tonight at the Astoria. Taxes are on at 10:30pm and Owl Drugs and Twin Crystals follow.

night screening
I made it down to the Cobalt ever so briefly last night to catch a smidge of "Fake Disco." The Fake Jazz Wednesday off-shoot was just like the usual night, but with some dancier rhythms. Or, at least, N213 was. A combination of lateness and then tiredness meant that's all I caught. It was, as usual, still a steal for $3 though.
M83 is at Richard's on May 24th. And while that is awfully close to Sasquatch, you'll note that it would be pretty tight for his touring schedule to squeeze into the fest's last day. But we'll find out for sure on Monday.
White Lung is playing their first show post-hiatus at the Emergency Room on March 15th. Vapid and Petroleum By-Products help give the ladies a proper welcome back to the stage.
Basketball is playing on the April 4th Cobalt bill. (thanks Sean)
And Sons and Daughters is now April 30th at Richard's.

no flashlight
But enough about that, let's get down to business, because there is a lot of exciting business to attend to.
Jay from International Falls emailed to let everyone know that he's organizing a show at Hoko's on April 5th, that's cheekily been dubbed Edgefest. No Hole and Moist (who - I think - played the last actual touring edition of Edgefest), but the show features the Blankett, Don L'Orange (from the Doers), Candles, International Falls, Joel Tong, Mt. Eerie, No Gold, and Octoberman.
Keeping it local, the March 7th Mohawk Lodge show (that was previously some other date) no longer features Pride Tiger. It's back to a Mohawk lodge headlining affair with Bend Sinister (who are going to record a full-length soon) and Japandroids (who are writing songs for a full-length right now).
Japandroids also rock the Cobalt on April 4th with Baby Control and Taxes.
Half Alive is bringing San Serac and Fluo Kids to Richard's this Friday.
They also loved the Teenagers so much last time, that they're bringing them back on April 18th.
DJ Mehdi is at Caprice on March 12th. Local boy, Rico Uno, supports.
Handsome Furs are at Richard's on April 21st.
Zach Condon makes his first visit to Vancouver on May 22nd when Beirut plays the Ballroom. (note: real close to Sasquatch)
El Perro Del Mar is at the Red Room on May 14th with Lykke Li and Anna Ternheim. More Swedes than a Canucks power play.

missing the plan
I don't have to go to work today, but for some reason I only slept in for an hour, so why I don't I talk about a show I should've recapped a few days ago...
There was a ton of stuff going on Friday night, but, as expected for anyone who knows me, I was at the Biltmore for the first part of the night.
At this point, I don't really know what else to say about the Clips or JPNDRDS that I haven't said already. Last year they put out two of my favourite records (and JPNDRDS already put out one of my favourite this year), and even though I've seen both bands play more than almost any other band in the last 12 months, they're still both live favourites.
Only downside of the evening? I had to bail early to catch some friends' birthdays at the Astoria, so I missed Fake Shark-Real Zombie. I bet they slayed (as usual) though.
Cut Copy are at Richard's on April 29th. I'll be completely honest though, I'm more excited to see if Black Kids can live up to both the hype and how fantastic their first four (released) songs are.
Cat Power is at the Vogue for an all-ager on April 10th. Here's to there being shows at the Vogue again. There's not enough all-ages venues in this city, and there's certainly nothing comparable to that size that doesn't sound like shit. Sonic Youth there a few years back is still one of the best things I've ever seen. (thank to everyone who emailed/commented on this one)
Eddie Vedder is performing solo at the Centre for the Performing Arts on April 2nd.
Wolf Eyes is going to destroy Pat's on June 11th.
Chromeo is at the Commodore now. Same day though.
Minus the Bear are at Richard's on March 24th.
Lo Fi Fnk are at the Bourbon on March 6th.
Tokyo Police Club are at the Plaza on May 16th.
Gary Louris (of the still on seemingly indefinite hiatus, Jayhawks) is at Richard's on March 17th. Vetiver open.

C'mon are at Pub 340 on March 29th. I've only streamed a few of their songs off of MySpace, but my general rule of thumb is that if it involved Ian Blurton, there's a pretty good chance of it being good.

JPNDRDS - Lullaby Death Jams
This record really deserves a proper review, but I talk about Japandroids so much, if you aren't already convinced that you should pick this up, I'm certainly not going to be the person who changes your mind.
Simply put, I thought their first EP was one of the best things I heard all of last year, and this one is about twice as good: the recording is better, the songwriting is sharper, and Brian and Dave sound tighter.
They're playing tonight at the Biltmore with two of the other best local live bands (Fake Shark Real Zombie and the Clips), and they'll have copies for $5. So come get one. Or if you're busy, go buy one at Zulu or Red Cat so they can afford to put out the long-player that they're writing.
If you're looking for a sample, you can still get "Darkness on the Edge of Gastown" (along with a bunch of other great music) in the mix for Insite that the guys were cordial enough to donate their music to.

For one reason or another, I've never listened to Josh Ritter, which is strange. Everything you read about the guy makes him out to be the type of intelligent songwriter that I tend to dig. His management company was kind enough to drop me a CD in the mail, so I guess I'll make up for missing out on him so far fairly soon. For anyone else in my position (or for anyone who's already one of the faithful), they also hooked up a pair of tickets to Josh's upcoming headlining gig at the Commodore to giveaway.
Let's keep this one fairly simple, and even though Valentine's day is sort of lame, in the spirit of the season...

the tale of a bird hit by lightning
On Friday, I walked down to the Biltmore to help CJSF celebrate the 5th anniversary of the station jumping to FM.
They brought cake and also the Secret Mommy Orchestra.
I think I've spoken to their prowess live a couple of times. And, even though I'm over the initial (and very pleasant) surprise of finding out that a Secrety Mommy performance was going to be so much more than Andy and a laptop, I'm still impressed by just how alive the very processed music sounds when it's performed in front of an audience. That's not a knock at the record, by the way. Electronic music should sound electronic, it's just nice when there are some extra elements live.
If I were to describe CR Avery, I would probably come up with a description of the exact type of thing that I despise, especially since he was sans band on Friday. He beatboxes, does what you can really only describe as some sort amalgamation of spoken word and a poetry slam, and he sort of seems like he belongs in that whole Commercial Drive hippy music scene... except he doesn't suck. In fact, he's pretty mind blowing.
I missed the first act, but I hear they were pretty good.
The Long Blondes are at Richard's on May 30th.

The Breeders are back together and hitting Richard's on May 23rd. They'll also be at Sasquatch the very next day.
Speaking of Sasquatch, Matt emailed with a link to this recap of other rumoured acts. Gang of Four/REM/the Cure/the Breeders... they're really aiming for a nostalgia trip this year.
Ladytron and Datarock are at the Commodore on May 23rd... also conveniently the day before Sasquatch.
AMS Events is bringing Julie Doiron back to town, but they won't be hosting things from their home base out at UBC. She'll play an all-ager on April 8th with the Superfantastics and Wintermitts (really, is there a more fitting local opener for Julie?) at the lovely St. James Hall.
AMS Events also presents the AMS Block Party (which replaces Arts County Fair this year) on April 11th. This one is a students only affair out on MacInnis field and features Stars, Wintersleep, Five Alarm Funk, and the Most Serene Republic, with the Half Alive crew and DJ Neil Hillbrandt spinning tunes between sets.
White Lung is at the Railway on April 4th with the Tranzmitors and Vapid. (thanks Steve)

If you're going to go out, you might as well go out with a bang, and that is just what the now defunct Tooth & Dagger did on Friday. I also snuck off early and caught the last half of Basketball at the Astoria.

Fake Shark-Real Zombie are finally releasing their debut, Zebra! Zebra! domestically, and to celebrate, they're throwing a party at the Chair Factory (1624 Franklin) on March 22nd. True to form, it sounds like it's going to be completely over the top. In addition to a set by the band, there'll be a fashion show, interactive art installation, and apparently you can even have your hair and/or makeup done... which might be good, since those Lindsay characters will be taking photos that you can get in arguments over the internet about later.

Taxes - Crystal Gravy
There are only two problems with Taxes' self-released EP. One is that the rather lo-fi sounding recording betrays how much bang and clatter they produce live. And the second is that it's so short.
Crystal Gravy finds four familiar Vancouver faces combing their past and present affiliations (Go Go Stop, Ghosthouse, WPP, Plus Perfect, Safety Show, Weather Pines, and a million other projects), taking all the loudest bits, and throwing them together into a neat little package.
I'm going to leave it at that, because you know what is better than my crappy review? Checking them out for yourself tonight at the Astoria. Taxes are on at 10:30pm and Owl Drugs and Twin Crystals follow.

night screening
I made it down to the Cobalt ever so briefly last night to catch a smidge of "Fake Disco." The Fake Jazz Wednesday off-shoot was just like the usual night, but with some dancier rhythms. Or, at least, N213 was. A combination of lateness and then tiredness meant that's all I caught. It was, as usual, still a steal for $3 though.
M83 is at Richard's on May 24th. And while that is awfully close to Sasquatch, you'll note that it would be pretty tight for his touring schedule to squeeze into the fest's last day. But we'll find out for sure on Monday.
White Lung is playing their first show post-hiatus at the Emergency Room on March 15th. Vapid and Petroleum By-Products help give the ladies a proper welcome back to the stage.
Basketball is playing on the April 4th Cobalt bill. (thanks Sean)
And Sons and Daughters is now April 30th at Richard's.

no flashlight
Thanks to Lindsay, who coincidentally asked me how long I'd been blogging for and inadvertently reminded me that the answer is three years today. Thanks for reading, for all the kind words, and especially the really outraged angry words. The latter always make me giggle. Here's to three years of typos, comma faults, and unintentional misinformation.
But enough about that, let's get down to business, because there is a lot of exciting business to attend to.
Jay from International Falls emailed to let everyone know that he's organizing a show at Hoko's on April 5th, that's cheekily been dubbed Edgefest. No Hole and Moist (who - I think - played the last actual touring edition of Edgefest), but the show features the Blankett, Don L'Orange (from the Doers), Candles, International Falls, Joel Tong, Mt. Eerie, No Gold, and Octoberman.
Keeping it local, the March 7th Mohawk Lodge show (that was previously some other date) no longer features Pride Tiger. It's back to a Mohawk lodge headlining affair with Bend Sinister (who are going to record a full-length soon) and Japandroids (who are writing songs for a full-length right now).
Japandroids also rock the Cobalt on April 4th with Baby Control and Taxes.
Half Alive is bringing San Serac and Fluo Kids to Richard's this Friday.
They also loved the Teenagers so much last time, that they're bringing them back on April 18th.
DJ Mehdi is at Caprice on March 12th. Local boy, Rico Uno, supports.
Handsome Furs are at Richard's on April 21st.
Zach Condon makes his first visit to Vancouver on May 22nd when Beirut plays the Ballroom. (note: real close to Sasquatch)
El Perro Del Mar is at the Red Room on May 14th with Lykke Li and Anna Ternheim. More Swedes than a Canucks power play.

missing the plan
I don't have to go to work today, but for some reason I only slept in for an hour, so why I don't I talk about a show I should've recapped a few days ago...
There was a ton of stuff going on Friday night, but, as expected for anyone who knows me, I was at the Biltmore for the first part of the night.
At this point, I don't really know what else to say about the Clips or JPNDRDS that I haven't said already. Last year they put out two of my favourite records (and JPNDRDS already put out one of my favourite this year), and even though I've seen both bands play more than almost any other band in the last 12 months, they're still both live favourites.
Only downside of the evening? I had to bail early to catch some friends' birthdays at the Astoria, so I missed Fake Shark-Real Zombie. I bet they slayed (as usual) though.
Cut Copy are at Richard's on April 29th. I'll be completely honest though, I'm more excited to see if Black Kids can live up to both the hype and how fantastic their first four (released) songs are.
Cat Power is at the Vogue for an all-ager on April 10th. Here's to there being shows at the Vogue again. There's not enough all-ages venues in this city, and there's certainly nothing comparable to that size that doesn't sound like shit. Sonic Youth there a few years back is still one of the best things I've ever seen. (thank to everyone who emailed/commented on this one)
Eddie Vedder is performing solo at the Centre for the Performing Arts on April 2nd.
Wolf Eyes is going to destroy Pat's on June 11th.
Chromeo is at the Commodore now. Same day though.
Minus the Bear are at Richard's on March 24th.
Lo Fi Fnk are at the Bourbon on March 6th.
Tokyo Police Club are at the Plaza on May 16th.
Gary Louris (of the still on seemingly indefinite hiatus, Jayhawks) is at Richard's on March 17th. Vetiver open.
The Von Bondies are at Richard's on April 25th.
C'mon are at Pub 340 on March 29th. I've only streamed a few of their songs off of MySpace, but my general rule of thumb is that if it involved Ian Blurton, there's a pretty good chance of it being good.
Plants and Animals are at the media Club on March24th. No Gold opens.
No Gold also plays the Media Club on March 7th with Secret Mommy and Basketball.
And last, but certainly not least, the SSRIs, Russian Words, Hymn for Her, and Emmett Hall (who I presume is not the late, great who helped found medicare) are at Little Mountain Studios on March 7th.

JPNDRDS - Lullaby Death Jams
This record really deserves a proper review, but I talk about Japandroids so much, if you aren't already convinced that you should pick this up, I'm certainly not going to be the person who changes your mind.
Simply put, I thought their first EP was one of the best things I heard all of last year, and this one is about twice as good: the recording is better, the songwriting is sharper, and Brian and Dave sound tighter.
They're playing tonight at the Biltmore with two of the other best local live bands (Fake Shark Real Zombie and the Clips), and they'll have copies for $5. So come get one. Or if you're busy, go buy one at Zulu or Red Cat so they can afford to put out the long-player that they're writing.
If you're looking for a sample, you can still get "Darkness on the Edge of Gastown" (along with a bunch of other great music) in the mix for Insite that the guys were cordial enough to donate their music to.

Contest: Josh Ritter Ticket Giveaway
For one reason or another, I've never listened to Josh Ritter, which is strange. Everything you read about the guy makes him out to be the type of intelligent songwriter that I tend to dig. His management company was kind enough to drop me a CD in the mail, so I guess I'll make up for missing out on him so far fairly soon. For anyone else in my position (or for anyone who's already one of the faithful), they also hooked up a pair of tickets to Josh's upcoming headlining gig at the Commodore to giveaway.
Let's keep this one fairly simple, and even though Valentine's day is sort of lame, in the spirit of the season...

the tale of a bird hit by lightning
On Friday, I walked down to the Biltmore to help CJSF celebrate the 5th anniversary of the station jumping to FM.
They brought cake and also the Secret Mommy Orchestra.
I think I've spoken to their prowess live a couple of times. And, even though I'm over the initial (and very pleasant) surprise of finding out that a Secrety Mommy performance was going to be so much more than Andy and a laptop, I'm still impressed by just how alive the very processed music sounds when it's performed in front of an audience. That's not a knock at the record, by the way. Electronic music should sound electronic, it's just nice when there are some extra elements live.
If I were to describe CR Avery, I would probably come up with a description of the exact type of thing that I despise, especially since he was sans band on Friday. He beatboxes, does what you can really only describe as some sort amalgamation of spoken word and a poetry slam, and he sort of seems like he belongs in that whole Commercial Drive hippy music scene... except he doesn't suck. In fact, he's pretty mind blowing.
I missed the first act, but I hear they were pretty good.

The legendary Daniel Johnston is at Richard's for an early show on April 19th.
The Breeders are back together and hitting Richard's on May 23rd. They'll also be at Sasquatch the very next day.
Speaking of Sasquatch, Matt emailed with a link to this recap of other rumoured acts. Gang of Four/REM/the Cure/the Breeders... they're really aiming for a nostalgia trip this year.
Ladytron and Datarock are at the Commodore on May 23rd... also conveniently the day before Sasquatch.
AMS Events is bringing Julie Doiron back to town, but they won't be hosting things from their home base out at UBC. She'll play an all-ager on April 8th with the Superfantastics and Wintermitts (really, is there a more fitting local opener for Julie?) at the lovely St. James Hall.
AMS Events also presents the AMS Block Party (which replaces Arts County Fair this year) on April 11th. This one is a students only affair out on MacInnis field and features Stars, Wintersleep, Five Alarm Funk, and the Most Serene Republic, with the Half Alive crew and DJ Neil Hillbrandt spinning tunes between sets.
White Lung is at the Railway on April 4th with the Tranzmitors and Vapid. (thanks Steve)
The Kills are at Richard's on May 14th.
Jenn Grant headlines a show at Canopy Sound Studios (E. 2nd @ Ontario) the day after she finishes a two night opening stand with Hayden. The Choir Practice supports.
And last, but certainly not least, the Salteens are giving away some free music... a 45s worth of music each month for a year, to be exact. The first single and "bside" are up now on their website.

Today's post will centre around the word "fuck."
Namely, that Fuck Buttons are no longer set to open for Holy Fuck, but will open for Caribou. In their place on the 25th, will be the Clips, which should make you exclaim, "fuck yes," if you have tickets to Richard's that night.

If you're going to go out, you might as well go out with a bang, and that is just what the now defunct Tooth & Dagger did on Friday. I also snuck off early and caught the last half of Basketball at the Astoria.
